Royal Navy helicopter crash worrying, PM says
A Royal Navy helicopter has crashed in a field near Okehampton, Devon, prompting a major emergency response and raising concerns for those involved. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the incident as a "deeply worrying time for the families" affected, adding that further details would be released as soon as possible. Devon and Cornwall Police Chief Constable James Vaughan confirmed that a major incident was declared after emergency services were called to the crash site at Sourton Down, near Okehampton, in the early hours of the morning. A Royal Navy spokesperson said the helicopter came down shortly before 04:00 BST and that an investigation into the circumstances of the crash is now under way. The spokesperson added that it would be inappropriate to comment further while inquiries continue. The area surrounding north Dartmoor is frequently used for military helicopter training due to its location between the Royal Navy's air stations at Yeovilton in Somerset and Culdrose in Cornwall. The crash site is also close to Okehampton Battle Camp, a military training facility regularly used by Merlin helicopter crews from the Commando Helicopter Force. Following the incident, the A386 between the A30 at Sourton Down and Fowley Cross near Okehampton was closed from around 04:30 BST. Sourton Cross Service Station, located close to the scene, also became inaccessible. BBC reporter Richard Green, who attended the scene, said witnesses described hearing unusual sounds from a helicopter flying overhead shortly before the crash. One resident reported that the aircraft sounded as though it was experiencing mechanical difficulties and appeared to be flying unusually low. Green described the crash site as "devastating", with wreckage scattered across a field. Witnesses told him the helicopter sounded as though it was in distress before coming down. Chief Constable Vaughan said emergency services, the Royal Navy and the Civil Aviation Authority were all involved in the response and investigation. "We continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash," he said. The cause of the incident remains unknown, and authorities are continuing their inquiries.
