Plans to add 17 parking spaces at Llanfairfechan promenade car park are facing opposition from planning officers because of flood-risk concerns. Conwy council’s planning committee is due to consider the application on September 16, with officers advising councillors to refuse it.
Council’s Plan for 17 New Parking Spaces Faces Flood Risk Objection Plans to create 17 additional parking spaces at a seafront car park in Llanfairfechan are facing a setback after planning officers advised councillors to refuse the application over flood-risk concerns. Conwy County Borough Council submitted the planning application for extra spaces at Llanfairfechan promenade car park. The proposal is due to be considered by the council’s planning committee on 16 September, with councillors being advised to reject the plans. Planning officers have said the proposal does not comply with measures intended to reduce flood risk. A report prepared for the committee describes the proposed development as unacceptable in terms of flood risk. The plans come after earlier proposals to improve the promenade car park, including drainage improvements and the installation of electric vehicle charging points. Previous plans also included additional parking spaces, with an earlier proposal reported as providing 18 extra spaces. However, those improvement works had not gone ahead at the time because negotiations were taking place with Natural Resources Wales. The latest application focuses on creating 17 new parking spaces at the seafront site. The potential expansion would provide additional capacity for motorists using the Llanfairfechan promenade area, but the flood-risk concerns now put the proposal in doubt. For local drivers, the decision could determine whether the car park gains the additional spaces originally planned as part of wider improvements. The case also highlights one of the issues councils can face when attempting to increase parking capacity, particularly at sites close to the coast or in areas where flood risk has to be considered. The planning committee is expected to discuss the application at its meeting on 16 September. Until councillors make a decision, the proposed 17 additional spaces cannot be treated as confirmed parking provision. For motorists visiting Llanfairfechan, the existing parking arrangements therefore remain the relevant option while the planning application is considered.
