Pavement parking causing problems for pedestrians Officers found several vehicles parked on the pavement, with police saying the obstruction was forcing pedestrians into the road. The parked vehicles were also restricting drivers’ views of oncoming traffic at the junction, creating an additional road safety concern. Rather than issuing penalties during the patrol, officers spoke to the motorists and gave them words of advice. Police said the drivers were compliant and accepted the advice on this occasion, meaning no penalties were issued during the operation. However, the warning could become more serious for motorists who continue to park in a way that causes an obstruction. Thames Valley Police said repeat offenders could receive Fixed Penalty Notices, while vehicles parked dangerously could also be towed away. The warning highlights why parking partly or completely on a pavement can create problems beyond simply taking up space. When a vehicle blocks part of a pavement, pedestrians may be forced to move into the road to get past, particularly where there is not enough room to pass safely.
