Gwynedd campervan parking concerns grow as councillor calls for action

Concerns over campervan and motorhome parking are growing across Gwynedd, with a councillor calling for action over vehicles staying in lay-bys, car parks and scenic areas. Cyngor Gwynedd has four Arosfan overnight sites, but reports of parking problems continue at locations including Llyn Padarn and a seafront car park in Bangor.

Campervan parking problems reported across Gwynedd as council urged to act

Gwynedd campervan parking concerns grow as councillor calls for action A councillor has called for action over what he described as increasing numbers of campervans being parked in “inappropriate” locations across Gwynedd. Cae Larsen is due to ask Cyngor Gwynedd to consider how the situation can be brought under better control, amid reports of motorhomes staying in lay-bys, car parks and scenic areas. Campervans causing parking pressure Larsen acknowledged the contribution campers make to Gwynedd’s tourist economy and said responsible van owners were welcome. However, he has raised concerns about vehicles staying for extended periods in locations that were not intended for that purpose. Reports of problems have included vehicles occupying parking spaces and creating issues for residents and other people using popular areas. One location highlighted is Llyn Padarn in Llanberis, where an eight-space Arosfan site has reportedly been outnumbered by campervans parked in adjacent bays. Cyngor Gwynedd currently has four dedicated Arosfan sites where motorhomes can park overnight, at a cost of £16.50 per night. Despite the availability of these designated sites, Larsen says problems with inappropriate parking and overnight stays continue in several locations. Concerns have also been reported at the Beach Road East Car Park in Hirael Bay, Bangor, where residents complained about large campervans taking up spaces during the summer. The issue follows work at the Bangor car park which included widening the entrance and removing a height restriction barrier. The council has said the barrier will be returned once the work is complete. Other locations where concerns have been reported include a coastal stretch north of Dinas Dinlle and Llyn Tegid, also known as Bala Lake. Councillor to raise issue with council Larsen is expected to raise the issue at Cyngor Gwynedd’s next full council meeting on 24 September. In a written report to councillors, he said large motorhomes were putting pressure on some of the county’s sensitive and popular areas, while also causing problems for residents and other parking users. He has called on the authority to consider what action could be taken to bring the situation under better control. The council has already urged people to “park responsibly” amid the concerns about campervan parking. For motorists and campervan owners visiting Gwynedd, the issue highlights the importance of checking where overnight parking is permitted and considering the impact on other users of busy car parks. The discussion is now expected to continue at the council meeting on 24 September, when councillors will have the opportunity to consider the concerns raised
