Kendal Car Park to Get Wider Bays but Fewer Parking Spaces

Relining works at Westmorland Shopping Centre car park in Kendal will begin on 28 September 2026. The project will widen standard parking bays from 2.4 metres to 2.6 metres, with some spaces between pillars becoming more than 3 metres wide. However, the revised layout will reduce the total number of available parking spaces.

Kendal Shopping Centre Parking Changes Begin on 28 September

Kendal Car Park to Get Wider Bays as Relining Works Begin Drivers using the Westmorland Shopping Centre car park in Kendal will see changes from Monday 28 September as relining works begin to create wider parking bays. Westmorland and Furness Council says the improvements are designed to make the spaces more suitable for modern vehicles, following feedback that some existing bays are too narrow. The current parking bays measure 2.4 metres wide, with the revised spaces increasing to 2.6 metres. Some bays positioned between structural pillars will also be widened to more than 3 metres where space allows. Work will move through the car park The works are expected to be completed by late October and will be carried out in stages to limit disruption for people using the shopping centre. Work will begin on Level 7 before moving progressively down through the building, one floor at a time. Only the areas being worked on will be temporarily closed, with affected spaces clearly coned off while the relining takes place. Level 7 will remain closed during the works, although drivers will still be able to access the other floors that remain open. Disabled parking bays will continue to be available throughout the project because they are not affected by the temporary closures. While the wider bays are intended to make parking easier for motorists, there will be a reduction in the overall number of spaces available once the revised layout is introduced. The council says it has reviewed its own parking arrangements and usage in response to the reduction in capacity at the shopping centre car park. The review is intended to help free up more visitor and resident parking elsewhere in Kendal town centre. For drivers visiting Kendal during the works, checking parking availability and planning where to leave the car before setting off could help avoid unnecessary delays, particularly while individual floors are temporarily unavailable. EveryonesParking can help motorists find suitable parking options before reaching their destination, which can be particularly useful when a familiar car park is undergoing temporary works or has reduced capacity. The project follows an earlier upgrade to lighting at the car park, where energy-efficient LED lighting was installed to improve visibility, safety and the overall visitor experience. With work starting on 28 September, motorists using Westmorland Shopping Centre should expect some temporary restrictions before the wider bays are completed later in October.
