Kendal car park to get wider parking bays as relining works begin Drivers using Westmorland Shopping Centre car park in Kendal will soon see wider parking bays as Westmorland and Furness Council begins a relining project designed to make spaces easier to use. Work is due to start on Monday 28 September, with the existing 2.4-metre bays being widened to 2.6 metres to better accommodate modern vehicles. The changes follow customer feedback that some of the existing parking bays are too narrow, particularly for many of the vehicles now being used by motorists. Although widening the bays will reduce the overall number of parking spaces at the car park, the council says the revised layout will provide a more practical and user-friendly experience. The work will be carried out floor by floor to limit disruption. Temporary closures will only be introduced on the levels where relining is taking place. Parking investment in Kendal The relining project follows a recent lighting upgrade at the car park, where energy-efficient LED lighting was installed to improve visibility, customer safety and the overall visitor experience. Councillor Andrew Jarvis, Cabinet Member for Finance and Deputy Leader of Westmorland and Furness Council, said the car park was a vital facility supporting Kendal's residents, businesses and visitors. He said the wider bays would make the facility easier, safer and more convenient to use while addressing a longstanding concern raised through customer feedback. The council also says the work has been planned so the car park can remain operational while the improvements are carried out across individual floors. The reduction in parking capacity is also being considered alongside the council's wider parking arrangements. The authority has reviewed its own car parks and their usage to help free up more visitor and resident parking in Kendal town centre. A wider review of parking provision across Kendal is planned this year, looking at current usage and future demand to help inform future parking strategies and investment decisions. For drivers, the main change at Westmorland Shopping Centre car park will be the trade-off between fewer spaces and wider bays that should provide more room for vehicles. Motorists using the car park from 28 September should also be aware that temporary closures will move between floors as the relining programme progresses.
