Leicester Parking Plan Could Introduce £35 Residents’ Permits

Leicester City Council is consulting residents and businesses on a proposed permit parking scheme covering part of the St Peters area. Around 476 homes and businesses could be affected, with residents’ permits proposed at £35 per vehicle per year. The consultation closes on October 25, with a public drop-in event taking place on October 1.

Leicester Residents Asked for Views on New Parking Scheme

Leicester Residents Face Proposed New Parking Permit Scheme Residents and businesses in part of Leicester are being asked for their views on plans for a new residents’ parking scheme covering streets in the St Peters area. Leicester City Council has proposed introducing permit-only parking across the area following complaints about commuter and business vehicles using residential streets for free all-day parking. Around 476 homes and businesses could be affected if the proposals go ahead, with households paying £35 a year for each vehicle requiring a residents’ permit. Drivers who park in the designated streets without the required permit would face a parking penalty under the proposed scheme. Which Leicester streets could be affected? The proposed scheme covers Biddulph Street, Sutherland Street, Chandos Street, Lonsdale Street, Rosalyn Street, Biddulph Avenue and part of Mere Road. The council is also proposing changes to existing double yellow lines at junctions with St Peters Road. The aim would be to reduce the length of the restrictions and create additional parking capacity. Short-stay parking bays are also proposed to support businesses operating in the area. The proposals are intended to address concerns about the availability of on-street parking for people who live in the affected streets. However, the plan has not yet been finalised. Leicester City Council is currently asking residents and businesses to give their views through an online survey. If the proposals receive the go-ahead, they would then proceed to a formal consultation as part of the statutory Traffic Regulation Order process. Under the council’s current parking permit scheme, residents’ permits would cost £35 per year. Business permits would cost £100 per year when tied to a particular vehicle, or £150 for a transferable business permit. Visitor permits would also be available, costing £40 for a year or £2 for a 24-hour permit. Permits are also available for landlords and carers under the council’s current scheme. Vehicles displaying a Blue Badge would be exempt from the permit-holder-only restriction outlined in the proposal. Residents and businesses can submit their views through the council’s online consultation. Paper copies have also been sent to properties in the affected area. A public drop-in event is scheduled for Thursday, October 1, at St Peter’s Highfields Church on St Peters Road, running from 2pm until 6.30pm. The consultation closes on Sunday, October 25. For drivers living in or regularly visiting the area, the proposals could change how on-street parking is managed if they are eventually approved. Checking parking arrangements before travelling can also help motorists avoid arriving without knowing where they can legally leave their vehicle. Services such as EveryonesParking can help drivers search for parking options before travelling, particularly when residential streets have limited availability or parking restrictions are changing. For now, the Leicester scheme remains a proposal, with residents and businesses being given the opportunity to comment before any formal Traffic Regulation Order process takes place.
