The same £7 charge will apply to black cab drivers using the airport's terminal rank. The airport said drivers typically pass this cost on to passengers as part of their fare. The increase has been attributed to rising business rates, higher energy costs, National Insurance and increases in the minimum wage. Free Parking Will Remain Available Despite the increase, the airport said motorists will still have access to a separate car park where stays of up to 20 minutes remain free. The airport acknowledged that some black cab drivers could decide not to work at the airport following the increase. However, it said it does not expect the change to cause disruption for passengers. The airport also pointed out that private hire drivers using the express drop-off facility typically pass the parking charge on to their customers as well. Parking revenue is also being used to support investment in new and improved passenger facilities, according to the airport. It said this forms part of work with airlines to expand its low-cost route network. Airport Has Alternative Plans for Busy Periods Liverpool John Lennon Airport said staff will help passengers find alternative ways to continue their journeys if there are not enough black cabs available during particularly busy periods. For drivers dropping passengers off, the key change is therefore the increase in the minimum express drop-off charge from £6 to £7 from 1 September. Motorists who want to avoid the express drop-off fee can continue to use the separate car park offering up to 20 minutes of free parking, according to the airport. The change also means passengers using black cabs or private hire vehicles may ultimately see the cost reflected in their fares, as drivers generally pass the parking charge on to customers. For airport users, checking which car park offers the most suitable option could help avoid an unnecessary parking charge when dropping someone off. The new £7 minimum charge will come into effect on 1 September, while the airport says investment in passenger facilities and its route network will continue.
