London could lose around 100,000 on-street parking spaces by 2040 if vehicles continue growing at the current rate, according to Transport & Environment. The think tank says increasing vehicle dimensions, particularly among larger SUVs, could reduce parking capacity across cities and contribute to wider road safety concerns.

T&E said the trend towards larger vehicles, described by critics as “carspreading”, could see on-street parking capacity across cities fall by between 8.5 per cent and 14 per cent by 2040. The analysis found that the average length of new cars has increased by around 1.2cm each year since the turn of the millennium. Vehicle height, bonnet height and width have also grown by about 0.5cm per year. For drivers in London, the issue could become particularly noticeable when trying to find a suitable parking space on already crowded streets. Larger vehicles can take up more room, putting additional pressure on limited on-street parking capacity. T&E described streets as becoming increasingly dominated by oversized vehicles that cities were not designed to accommodate. The think tank also warned that the continued growth in vehicle size could have consequences beyond parking. According to the study, the rise of larger SUVs could contribute to around 400 additional road deaths each year across the UK and European Union by 2040, compared with a scenario where car sizes gradually returned to 2015 levels. The research also points to a wider change in the types of vehicles being sold. T&E claimed that car manufacturers have moved away from smaller models despite shrinking family sizes and falling car occupancy. The growing size of vehicles creates a difficult challenge for cities, as increasing the dimensions of individual parking spaces could reduce the total number of cars that can be accommodated. For London, that could make existing parking pressures more significant if the number of spaces continues to fall while demand for convenient on-street parking remains. The study's findings highlight how vehicle design can have a direct effect on the amount of space available on urban streets. What may appear to be a normal parking space can become harder to use when the vehicles occupying it become progressively larger. The issue is not limited to individual drivers struggling to park. If the trend continues, T&E's analysis suggests that the overall capacity of city streets could be affected, leaving fewer spaces available for motorists. With London potentially facing the loss of about 100,000 parking spaces by 2040, the size of vehicles is becoming an increasingly important part of the wider debate around parking and how urban roads are used. For drivers, the analysis raises a straightforward question: if cars continue to grow, where will they all fit? The figures suggest that parking capacity could come under greater pressure unless vehicle sizes or the way cities accommodate them changes.
