Luton Council has extended some parking enforcement shifts until midnight in the town centre, Bury Park and Marsh Road. The targeted patrols began on 19 September and are aimed at improving compliance with existing restrictions, road safety and emergency access.
Luton Extends Night-Time Parking Enforcement Until Midnight Drivers in parts of Luton are now facing later parking enforcement, with council officers working until midnight in areas where night-time parking problems have been identified. Luton Council introduced the targeted change on 19 September, extending some Civil Enforcement Officers' shifts beyond the previous 9pm finish. Which areas are being targeted? The later patrols are taking place on a rotational basis across Luton town centre, Bury Park and Marsh Road. The council says the additional enforcement is focused on improving compliance with existing parking restrictions rather than introducing new rules. Drivers who park in contravention of existing restrictions during the evening could therefore face enforcement action. The council says the patrols are also intended to improve road safety and keep important access routes clear. Emergency access among council concerns Luton Council says illegally parked vehicles can obstruct access routes used by emergency services, including fire engines. The additional night-time patrols are intended to help prevent these situations and improve access through areas where parking is already under pressure. Councillor Adrees Latif, Luton Council's Portfolio Holder for Parking Operations, said the authority had heard concerns from residents and local businesses about irresponsible night-time parking. He also acknowledged that parking availability can be particularly difficult in densely populated areas, with the council continuing to look at wider parking concerns. Existing restrictions still apply The council has stressed that the targeted enforcement does not mean new evening parking restrictions have been introduced. Instead, existing restrictions remain in place and can now be enforced later in the evening in the targeted areas. For drivers, that means checking signs and parking restrictions remains important even when parking enforcement officers would previously have finished their shifts. The council says parking problems can be reported through the Love Clean Streets app or through its website. For motorists visiting busy areas such as Bury Park and Luton town centre in the evening, planning parking before travelling can also help avoid searching for a space and accidentally stopping somewhere subject to restrictions. EveryonesParking can help drivers find and plan parking before a journey, particularly when visiting busy areas where available spaces and parking restrictions can vary. The later patrols are currently being carried out on a rotational basis, so drivers should not assume that restrictions will only be enforced before 9pm.
