Newham launches biggest-ever parking and kerbside consultation Newham Council has launched its biggest-ever consultation on parking and kerbside spaces, giving residents, businesses and visitors the chance to have their say on how local streets should be managed in the future. The 12-week consultation began on 17 September and will run until 10 December, with the responses set to help shape a long-term parking and kerbside strategy for the borough. Residents asked how they use local streets The Parking and Kerbside Space Review will gather views and experiences from people who live, work, study or visit Newham. The consultation asks how people use their streets, including how they walk, scoot, wheel, cycle and drive, as well as the challenges they currently face. Parking costs will also be examined, with residents and businesses being asked about affordability and how parking charges affect them. The council is also seeking views on parking availability, including whether there are enough spaces and people's experiences of parking close to their homes and destinations across Newham. Another part of the review will look at how kerbside space is currently used and how it could be managed differently in the future. Future parking and kerbside priorities The consultation will consider how changing demand is affecting limited road space and what different neighbourhoods need from their streets. Supporting local high streets and businesses is one of the areas residents and businesses will be asked to consider as part of the review. Future uses for kerbside space will also be discussed, including electric vehicle options, outdoor seating and other community-focused uses. Fairness and accessibility are another key part of the consultation, with the council seeking views on how streets can work for everyone. Mayor of Newham Forhad Hussain said local people had asked for a discussion about parking, kerbside spaces and how streets are used. He said the aim was to seek solutions that balance the needs of everyone using the roads fairly, while supporting the local economy and enabling people to visit their local high streets. Cllr Susan Masters, Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Environment, said the final strategy should reflect the views of local people and called on those who live, work or study in Newham to take part. The council says the evidence gathered through the consultation will help inform a long-term strategy that anticipates changes in how roads are used and supports local neighbourhoods. For Newham drivers, the review provides an opportunity to comment on issues including parking availability, parking costs and how kerbside areas are used. The consultation will remain open until 10 December, after which the views gathered will help inform the borough's longer-term approach to parking and kerbside space.
