North Northamptonshire is moving towards public consultation on a new council-wide car parking strategy. The proposals could introduce or retain parking charges at some car parks, create a banded tariff system and increase the use of contactless, cashless and app-based payments. Improvements to car parks, EV charging and disabled parking are also being considered, but no final parking changes have yet been approved.
North Northamptonshire Parking Changes Could Bring New Charges and Cashless Payments Drivers across North Northamptonshire could see major changes to council car parks under a new parking strategy that is moving towards public consultation. The draft plans aim to create a more consistent approach to parking across the area, where different car parks currently have different prices, payment options and parking rules. The proposals include a new banded approach to parking tariffs, meaning charges could be structured differently depending on the type and use of individual car parks. Some council car parks could also have parking charges introduced or retained under the proposals. However, the council has stressed that no final decisions have been made at this stage. The strategy is designed to make council-owned car parks financially self-sustaining, with the council saying parking income would help cover costs such as business rates, utilities, repairs and maintenance. The council also says any surplus from parking charges must be used for purposes permitted by law, including highway improvements, public transport improvements and environmental measures. For drivers, one of the biggest changes could be the way parking is paid for. The draft strategy proposes greater use of contactless, cashless and app-based payment options, alongside a reduced reliance on traditional pay-and-display machines. Digital permits are also proposed, while the council wants to consolidate Traffic Regulation Orders into a single digital system. The strategy also proposes using parking data and ANPR for operational insight and decision-making. The plans are not only about charges. The council wants to invest in the condition, appearance and functionality of its car parks, with priorities including accessibility, safety, usage and customer experience. Electric vehicle charging infrastructure and improvements to disabled parking provision are also included among the proposals being considered. The council says the strategy is intended to reduce confusion for motorists by creating a clearer and more consistent parking system across North Northamptonshire. It also hopes better management of spaces will improve availability and turnover in busy commercial areas, potentially making it easier for shoppers and visitors to find parking near town centres. The council's Executive approved the next stage of the strategy on 15 September, delegating authority to finalise the draft before public consultation. The decision is subject to call-in and is due to come into force on 23 September. The consultation is expected to give residents, businesses and visitors an opportunity to comment before the strategy progresses. The council says consultation findings will later be considered before a final strategy is presented to the Executive in early 2027. For drivers, this is a story worth watching because changes to parking charges, payment methods, permits and car park management can have a direct effect on the cost and convenience of everyday journeys. Planning ahead can become particularly useful when visiting unfamiliar town centres or busy shopping areas. EveryonesParking can help drivers look for parking options before travelling, rather than leaving the search until they arrive. For now, motorists should not assume that proposed charges or new parking rules are already in force. The North Northamptonshire plans remain subject to the consultation and decision-making process.
