Oxted is facing a parking shortage after its 366-space railway station car park was closed because of structural damage. Smaller car parks are now dealing with increased pressure, while local organisations have warned drivers not to use business permit bays needed by town-centre businesses.
Oxted Parking Crisis as 366-Space Station Car Park Remains Closed Drivers in Oxted are facing a growing parking problem after the town's largest car park was suddenly closed because of structural damage. The multi-storey car park at Oxted railway station has been closed since Wednesday, September 9, leaving rail passengers and town-centre visitors without access to its 366 spaces. The closure has already created significant disruption, with local organisation Love Oxted describing the situation as a “parking crisis”. Oxted loses its largest town-centre car park The station car park is one of the main parking facilities serving Oxted town centre, making its sudden closure particularly significant for local businesses and visitors. Drivers are now being directed towards smaller alternatives, including Ellice Road and Tandridge Leisure Centre car parks. Ellice Road has around 163 spaces, meaning the town has lost a substantial amount of parking capacity while the main station facility remains unavailable. The disruption has also raised concerns about drivers parking in areas where they are not permitted to park. Love Oxted has specifically asked motorists using Ellice Road Car Park not to occupy business permit bays, warning that local businesses need those spaces for their staff and operations. The organisation said businesses were arriving to find non-permit vehicles occupying the bays, leaving them struggling to find nearby parking and potentially affecting their ability to open their shops. What happened to the station car park? The closure followed the discovery of damage to the car park's ceiling, according to information provided by the rail operator. Southern has apologised for the disruption and said it is working with the relevant parties to understand the problem and resolve it as soon as possible. Rail passengers have been told they can drive to an alternative Southern car park and have their rail ticket accepted there. Season ticket holders have also been told they will not need to pay again for parking when using the alternative arrangements. The car park has two floors, with the upper section leased to Morrisons. That section has since reopened after work was carried out, while the lower rail-operated section remains closed. Morrisons said the lower deck was affected by structural issues and confirmed that its own car park is fully reopened and operationally safe. For Oxted drivers, the situation shows how quickly the loss of one major car park can affect an entire town centre. With hundreds of spaces unavailable, finding a suitable alternative before arriving has become more important. Drivers heading into Oxted for work, shopping or rail travel may therefore want to check available parking options before setting off rather than relying on the station car park being open. EveryonesParking can help drivers find parking options in advance, making it easier to plan around temporary closures and busy town-centre parking. There is currently no confirmed reopening date for the lower section in the information provided, although Morrisons said permanent remedial works are being progressed and should allow the rail-operated section to reopen shortly. Until then, Oxted's parking shortage is likely to remain an important issue for commuters, visitors and businesses relying on access to the town centre.
