Peak District drivers warned over dangerous parking on Woodhead Pass Drivers parking dangerously along the Peak District’s Woodhead Pass have been warned they could face a £100 fine, three penalty points and having their vehicle towed away. Derbyshire Police said it had carried out additional patrols and enforcement action over the summer to tackle poor parking along the A628 Woodhead Pass, a major route connecting Manchester and Sheffield. The force said vehicles parked in dangerous positions, including on white lines, can create a serious risk for other road users travelling along the busy route. Police warn of head-on crash risk Derbyshire Police said poorly parked vehicles can force traffic towards the middle of the road and increase the risk of head-on collisions with oncoming vehicles. The issue has been a particular concern during periods of heavy visitor traffic, with the area attracting people heading to the Peak District for walks and other outdoor activities. During the May bank holiday weekend, police said 21 vehicles were seized and towed away as part of enforcement activity in the area. Glossop beat officers said Derbyshire is home to some of the country's most scenic walks, but urged visitors to make sure they enjoy the area safely and park responsibly. Police said parking is a known problem in the area and a problem management plan was put in place over the summer to address the issue. Drivers who leave their vehicles in a dangerous position risk being towed, while police said they could also receive a £100 fine and three penalty points. The force warned that the consequences are not limited to potential damage to a parked vehicle, as poorly positioned cars can put other motorists at risk. The warning comes alongside wider parking enforcement measures introduced elsewhere in the Peak District this summer. Red routes were introduced in and around Castleton in May, marking the first time the restrictions had been introduced in Derbyshire. The red routes were brought in to address long-standing highway problems linked to the large number of visitors travelling to the Mam Tor area. Derbyshire County Council has said more than 160 fines have been issued since the red routes were introduced, highlighting the scale of parking enforcement now taking place in the area. For drivers visiting the Peak District, the latest warning is a reminder that finding a safe and appropriate place to park is particularly important on busy routes such as Woodhead Pass. With police patrols and enforcement continuing, motorists should avoid parking where their vehicle could obstruct traffic or create a danger for other road users
