A parking area and undercroft at Rivergate in Peterborough city centre have been closed for three months following concerns about anti-social behaviour and associated criminality. The court-approved order restricts public access, with exceptions for specified residents, management company employees and emergency services.
Peterborough Parking Area Closed for Three Months After ASB Concerns Drivers and residents in Peterborough city centre are being affected by the temporary closure of a parking area following concerns about anti-social behaviour and associated criminality. Cambridgeshire Police said an area of Rivergate has been closed to the public after an open space closure order was granted at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Monday 21 September. The order covers the parking area and undercroft beneath Burlington House, Churchill House, Admiral House and Riverview at Viersen Platz. The closure is expected to remain in place for three months, meaning most members of the public will not be able to access the affected area during this period. Access is limited to tenants of the flats named in the order, employees of the management company and emergency services. The closure followed an application by Peterborough’s City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team after concerns were raised by residents about activity taking place in the area. PC Dave Holland said the application was made in response to residents' concerns about anti-social behaviour, particularly behaviour associated with drug use. Police said they had worked with partner agencies and residents in response to the concerns before applying for the closure order. The temporary restrictions mean drivers who normally use the affected parking area will need to be aware that access is currently prohibited unless they fall within one of the permitted categories. Anyone who ignores the closure order could face criminal consequences. Police said breaching the order is an offence that could result in imprisonment of up to three months, a fine, or both. The closure also highlights why drivers should check local parking information before travelling to a familiar destination. A car park or parking area that is normally available can sometimes become inaccessible because of temporary restrictions or enforcement action. For Peterborough drivers, knowing about the Rivergate closure before arriving could help avoid an unnecessary journey to a parking area that is currently unavailable. Police have asked anyone with information about a breach of the closure order to report it through the Cambridgeshire Police website. With the order scheduled to remain in place for three months, drivers visiting Peterborough city centre may need to consider alternative parking arrangements while the restriction remains in force. EveryonesParking can help drivers plan parking before travelling, making it easier to check available options and avoid arriving at a destination only to discover that a familiar parking area is temporarily closed.
