Campervan parking ban extended in Scarborough after complaints An overnight ban on campervan and motorhome parking has been extended across several roads in Scarborough after councillors said previous restrictions had displaced parking problems into residential areas. The latest restrictions cover Belvedere Road, Holbeck Road, Esplanade Crescent and Sea Cliff Road, with motor caravans banned from parking overnight throughout the year. The original restrictions were introduced in 2024 and prohibited motor caravans from parking between 11pm and 7am at Sandsend, Royal Albert Drive in Scarborough and Cayton Bay. Residents raise concerns over overnight motorhome parking Councillor Rich Maw said residents had reported campervans outside their homes, grey water being disposed of and laundry being hung on hedges. North Yorkshire Council made the earlier measures permanent after receiving complaints about motorhomes staying in some areas for extended periods. The Local Democracy Reporting Service understands the council received thousands of complaints linked to overnight motorhome parking. The council said the original Experimental Traffic Regulation Order was introduced after the number of motorhomes staying in some coastal locations reached what it described as an “unacceptable level”. Councillor Maw said moving motorhomes from one location could simply push the problem into nearby residential streets, leading to what he described as a displacement of the issue. He also argued that an “aire-style” scheme providing designated overnight parking for motorhomes should have been considered as an alternative. A separate trial at Cayton Bay was later abandoned after signs were repeatedly vandalised and thrown from a cliff. New restrictions face consultation The latest order prohibits all motor caravans from parking overnight on the affected Scarborough roads, with the consultation on the scheme due to run until February 2027. Earlier this year, the council's executive member for highways and transport, Malcolm Taylor, said the authority needed to balance support for tourism with concerns raised by local communities. Residents living on the newly restricted streets who own a motor caravan can apply to register their vehicle with the council, allowing it to be exempt from the ban. Responses to the consultation must be made in writing and received before the deadline of 22 February 2027. The extended restrictions are intended to address concerns about overnight motorhome parking while the consultation gives residents and other affected parties an opportunity to respond to the scheme.
