Even when drivers have parked within the marked bays, the size of some vehicles can leave less room in the surrounding spaces and aisles. Parking space dimensions have remained broadly consistent for decades in many areas. In the US, the report identifies a commonly used standard of around nine feet wide by 18 feet long, although dimensions can vary depending on the location and type of car park. The problem is that vehicles have changed considerably over the same period. Modern cars, particularly larger SUVs and pickups, can take up significantly more space than many of the vehicles that were common when existing parking standards were established. The report points to full-size trucks and SUVs as a major part of the problem. Some larger vehicles can exceed the dimensions of a standard parking bay, making it difficult for them to fit comfortably without extending towards an aisle or affecting neighbouring spaces. This can create a knock-on effect for other drivers. A smaller car may fit comfortably within its own bay, but if a larger vehicle is parked next to it, getting in and out can become considerably more difficult. Why aren't parking spaces simply made bigger? Increasing the size of parking bays sounds like a straightforward solution, but there is an obvious drawback. Making individual spaces larger would reduce the number of vehicles that could legally fit within the same car park. For retailers, landlords and developers, that can be a significant consideration because parking capacity has to be balanced against the limited amount of available land. Parking requirements are also often connected to wider local zoning rules. The report highlights New York City as an example of how parking dimensions can vary between locations. Its zoning regulations specify spaces that are 18 feet long and 8.5 feet wide, showing that there is no single universal parking bay size. Changing parking standards can therefore involve much more than simply repainting the lines. Local authorities and developers may need to consider wider planning and zoning requirements before changing the layout of an established car park. For drivers, the result is a familiar frustration: parking bays can appear perfectly normal on the ground but feel considerably tighter when surrounded by larger modern vehicles. The issue is not necessarily poor parking ability, but a growing mismatch between vehicles and the spaces designed for them. As vehicles continue to change, the question is whether parking standards will eventually change with them. For now, drivers may continue to encounter car parks designed around vehicle sizes that no longer reflect the full range of cars using them.
