Parking problems in York's Lawrence Street area have prompted a call for a ResPark permit consultation, with 58 residents from more than 10 streets backing a petition. The council says the request is progressing through its waiting list and that residents would be consulted on any proposed scheme, including its boundary, costs and operating hours.
York Parking Chaos Prompts Call for ResPark Permit Consultation Residents in part of York say parking problems have become increasingly difficult, with calls for a new ResPark permit scheme in the Lawrence Street area. The campaign focuses on streets between the Walmgate Bar junction and Hull Road, where residents say finding a parking space has become a persistent problem. Residents call for action on York parking Green Party activist Ben Ffrench said residential parking permits were needed to tackle what he described as ongoing parking chaos in the area. A petition calling for a ResPark consultation has received support from 58 residents across more than 10 streets, including Granville Terrace, Landsdowne Terrace, Catherine Court and Milton Street. Mr Ffrench said residents were facing significant difficulties finding somewhere to park and called for a consultation on a permit scheme. He said the issue had gone on for too long and argued that blocked streets and a lack of available spaces were causing problems for local residents. York ResPark consultation could be coming Labour Guildhall councillor Tony Clarke said a petition submitted on behalf of Milton Street residents was nearing the top of the council's waiting list. Cllr Clarke said he and Fishergate councillor Conrad Fisher had also asked for Granville Terrace, Farrar Street and other nearby streets to be considered as part of the process. He said the consultation process for residents' views was not far away and that the council had changed the system for handling ResPark requests. The City of York Council said residents seeking a ResPark scheme were encouraged to canvass their local area for support so proposals could be taken forward. How much does a York ResPark permit cost? The cost of a ResPark permit starts at £115 a year for a household's first vehicle, according to the information provided with the campaign. However, there is currently no confirmed ResPark scheme for the Lawrence Street area. The council said that when a request reaches the top of its waiting list, it develops a proposed boundary and consults properties within that area. Residents would then be asked for their views on whether they support the proposed scheme, as well as permit costs and the preferred hours of operation. The council also said consultation areas can be wider than the streets where a request originally came from because of the potential for parking problems to be displaced into neighbouring streets. For drivers in the Lawrence Street area, the next stage will therefore be the consultation process and any decision that follows it.
